Background and Significance of the Teams
Before Super Bowl LX, the NFL will witness an unprecedented NFC title game: Los Angeles Rams versus Seattle Seahawks, for the right to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
With 11 wins for the Rams and 3 for the Seahawks, there will be 14 NFC title games over the weekend, but none have featured these teams facing each other. This marks the first time they will compete to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
Rams’ Dramatic Journey to the NFC Title Game
The Rams secured their spot in the 2025-26 NFC title game dramatically, defeating the Chicago Bears 20-17 as visitors with a game-winning field goal in overtime.
The entire Soldier Field crowd of 60,253 fell silent as Harrison Mavis’ 42-yard field goal attempt became successful, sealing a game that seemed to slip away from the Rams.
With less than 4 minutes remaining, the Rams managed to turn the game around, achieving a 17-10 lead with less than 1 minute left in regulation. However, their defense allowed Chicago to equalize in the final seconds.
In overtime, it appeared Chicago was on track to complete the comeback with Caleb Williams’ inspired play. Yet, Williams’ slow but secure passes fell short by just 15 yards from the field goal attempt zone. Kamren Curl’s third interception of the night handed the offense back to the Rams.
Matt Stafford, a candidate for MVP of the season, pushed his teammates to cover those 42 yards, which Harrison Mavis made effective with a precise right-legged kick.
Rams’ Pursuit of a Historic Sixth NFC Title
The Los Angeles Rams hold the second-highest number of NFC titles, with five, tied with Philadelphia Eagles. They trail only San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys, who have eight each.
Securing a sixth title next weekend would place the Rams among the historic trio with 49ers and Cowboys.
However, their path to glory won’t be easy, as the Seattle Seahawks boast a perfect 100% success rate in NFC title games. They’ve triumphed over Carolina Panthers (2005), San Francisco 49ers (2013), and Green Bay Packers (2014).
Seahawks’ Home-Field Advantage
In this first NFC title game against the Rams, the Seahawks enjoy home-field advantage at Lumen Field, with over 68,000 seats available.
The Rams prevented this matchup from being the anticipated clash between the top two seeds from the NFC regular season, which were the Bears. Los Angeles was fifth in that regard, trailing the Seahawks in their own NFC West division.
Chicago aimed to reach its first NFC title game since 2010, when they lost the right to compete in the Super Bowl against the Packers.
Caleb Williams and head coach Ben Johnson, a rookie duo, surprised many by securing the second spot in the NFC. Though they fell short of their dream of contending for their third Super Bowl, the Seahawks have previously lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
