Background on Rodrigo Pacheco
Rodrigo Pacheco, currently ranked 219th in the ATP individual rankings, is Mexico’s top-ranked tennis player. His recent performance in the Abierto de Baja California Sur (Los Cabos Open) has left fans and analysts disappointed.
Fourth Consecutive Early Exit
For the fourth consecutive year, Pacheco was eliminated from the Los Cabos Open in the first round. His opponent this year, Adam Walton from Australia, defeated Pacheco in straight sets (7-6, 6-2) on Tuesday night at the Mextenis stadium in Cabo Sports Complex.
Pacheco’s Record at Los Cabos Open
With this loss, Pacheco’s record in singles at the Los Cabos Open stands at 0-4. He has yet to win a single set in the tournament, having lost all eight sets played. Notably, Pacheco had to retire from his match against Rinky Hijikata in 2022 due to injury while trailing 0-4 in the second set.
Recent Successes and High Expectations
Just a few months ago, Pacheco gave Mexican fans reason to cheer by reaching the quarterfinals of the Abierto de Acapulco, a tournament with a higher ranking (500 vs. 250 for Los Cabos). In Acapulco, Pacheco secured his first ATP Tour victory against Aleksandar Vukic, who had defeated him in Los Cabos 2024. He advanced to the quarterfinals by bypassing Casper Ruud’s withdrawal due to illness.
Double Disappointment in Los Cabos 2025
Pacheco’s run ended against the Spanish player Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, preventing his advancement to the semifinals. High expectations were placed on Pacheco for Los Cabos 2025, especially after being eliminated from the doubles draw the previous night. His doubles partner, Colombian Nicolás Mejía, suffered a head injury that forced him to withdraw from their match against Australian pair Matthew Ebden and John Peers.
Other Mexican Players’ Performances
Alongside Pacheco’s elimination, fellow Mexican Alan Magadán also lost in the first round of singles to Chinese player Bu Yunchaokete (6th seed) in straight sets (7-6, 2-6). Only Alejandro Hernández has secured a spot in the octafinals after defeating Japanese player Taro Daniel in three sets and setting up a match against top-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev.
