Strengthening Mexico’s Technological Innovation Ecosystem
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy have signed a collaboration agreement to bolster the objectives of Plan México, focusing on digital talent development, fostering tech startups, and adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in processes.
At the beginning of the year, AWS announced a $5 billion investment in Querétaro’s data center region. This infrastructure hosts the platform enabling any Mexican to access technology solutions training for their ventures, explained Rubén Mugártegui, AWS General Manager for Mexico.
Strategic Alignment with Plan México
Ximena Escobedo, head of the Productive Development Unit at the Secretariat of Economy, highlighted that this partnership aligns with Plan México’s strategic axes, especially in developing specialized human capital and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), crucial for Plan México.
The regionalization of the economy aims to create 15 development poles with specific vocations, including Oaxaca’s Interoceanic Corridor. According to INEGI’s National Survey on Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Households (ENDUTIH), Guerrero (58.9%), Oaxaca (55.5%), and Chiapas (50.7%) have the lowest percentages of households with internet access.
Since accessing these courses requires an internet connection and focuses on digitalization and AI, “we are committed to reducing the digital divide and bringing these opportunities to all states, including those with greater lag,” Escobedo stated.
More Than Infrastructure: Comprehensive Ecosystems
Development Poles within Plan México are not just infrastructure projects but complete ecosystems where talent, private investment, and public policies converge to generate inclusive growth and reduce regional disparities, Escobedo detailed.
The official explained that they are currently analyzing the creation of a specialized innovation and technology pole interconnected with other national poles, “we are in constant dialogue with the Digital Agency and other departments to design these ecosystems that genuinely promote Mexico’s priority sectors.”
Made in Mexico
As part of the alliance, the “Made in Mexico” seal was extended to include digital services, enhancing visibility and strengthening national technological development. This measure complements the data residency strategy, ensuring sensitive information from financial institutions and government is stored domestically.
The AWS agreement aims to train 450,000 people in information technologies over the next three years, focusing on forming local talent to capitalize on opportunities generated by development poles. The goal is to create innovation networks enabling each state to contribute with its unique capabilities.
