Key Industries in Puebla Identified for Growth

Carlos Sosa Spínola, president of the National Council of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra), emphasized that businesses in Puebla must become more competitive, particularly in the automotive, plastic, agroalimentary, and metal-mechanical sectors. These industries hold significant growth potential.

Global Economic Environment and Competitiveness

In the face of the global economic climate, Sosa Spínola stated that local industries should aim to become leading global suppliers. While some have achieved this status temporarily, continuous improvement is necessary.

He highlighted that competitiveness encompasses productive capacity, labor force, and pricing. Price is a crucial factor influencing market dynamics.

Diversifying Markets and Reducing Dependence on the US Market

Sosa Spínola stressed the importance of diversifying market niches through strategic planning to minimize reliance on the US market.

He acknowledged that the US trade policy, including tariffs, impacts all countries. The recent steel tariffs have affected Puebla’s established industries, prompting Canacintra to report on the effects on employment and the economy.

To boost competitiveness, Sosa Spínola suggested investing in more industrial parks to attract automotive sector investments, as businesses might otherwise relocate to Tlaxcala or northern Mexico.

Current State of Industrial Parks in Puebla

Canacintra’s diagnosis revealed that 14 out of 21 industrial complexes in Puebla do not meet international standards for attracting investments.

The state government announced a 100 million peso investment in 2025 to address industrial park issues, prioritizing those requiring greater intervention.

Sosa Spínola praised the state authorities’ willingness to address this long-standing industrial request but noted that significant infrastructure improvements are still needed, as there’s a 20-year backlog.

He emphasized that while efforts are being made to tackle the industrial park deficit, conditions must also be created to attract investments for new and improved complexes.
