Introduction and Background
On July 1, an official development polo for well-being was created in Chetumal, spanning 87 hectares. This initiative aims to foster industries such as electricity, machinery, agroindustry, information technology, metalworking, and logistics within the region.
Educational Foundation
The region boasts a robust educational landscape with over 30 institutions offering secondary and higher education. This ensures a skilled workforce and ample opportunities for local youth.
Social and Environmental Considerations
The project was approved without the need for indigenous consultation, as it does not affect territories of native communities. The Secretariat for the Environment deemed the development viable, provided ecological protection measures are implemented.
Business Perspective
Sergio León Cervantes, president of Empresarios por Quintana Roo and appointed federal promoter for investments, outlined the polo’s focus on agroindustrial projects and sustainable energy generation from sources like solar or wind.
- Incentives: Federal incentives, 100% capital investment deduction, and the free trade zone status of Chetumal aim to attract medium-sized businesses prioritizing renewable energy over fossil fuels.
- Location: The polo is strategically located near Chetumal’s international airport, the Tren Maya station, and a park industrial, maximizing its potential for air and land connectivity in goods transport.
- Additional Incentives: A 0% tax rate on the Value Added Tax (VAT) for five years is planned for authorized sectors within the 87-hectare polo.
León Cervantes emphasized that the development process requires patience, comparing it to building a house with foundations, structure, and finishes for lasting economic transformation.
