Guadalajara, Jalisco’s capital city, is home to the most significant segment in its meetings and conferences industry: medical congresses, according to Gustavo Staufert, the director of the Oficina de Visitantes y Convenciones de Guadalajara (OFVC).

Staufert highlighted that out of all the congresses held in Guadalajara, one-third are medical congresses. He emphasized that “without any doubt, the most important segment of the meetings and conferences industry is medical congresses.”

In 2027, just a year after Guadalajara hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2026, Expo Guadalajara will welcome the second most significant medical congress globally – the World Congress of Dermatology. This event is supported not only by pharmaceutical laboratories but also the cosmetics industry.
Medical Tourism and Congresses in Guadalajara
Staufert differentiated medical tourism into two categories: individuals seeking medical consultations or interventions and medical congresses. He mentioned that 75% of medical tourists to Guadalajara are national, while 25% are international, primarily from the seven neighboring states.
Growing Hospital Infrastructure
Carlos Rubén Arce Ruelas, president of the Asociación de Hospitales Particulares de Jalisco, echoed Guadalajara’s high-quality hospital ranking, with eight of the best hospitals in Mexico located in Jalisco.
Staufert added, “The construction of Real San José Valle Real and the ongoing Angeles hospital project demonstrate the demand for advanced medical facilities in the region.”
