Jalisco’s Advancement in Semiconductor Industry
Jalisco, Mexico, is striving to establish itself as a global leader in the semiconductor industry. Having already secured its position as the national leader in chip design, with 70% of design-focused companies in the country, Jalisco is now venturing into the next major stage: Assembly, Testing, and Packaging (ATP) of semiconductors.
The Role of the State’s Secretary of Economic Development
Cindy Blanco, the Secretary of Economic Development (Sedeco), emphasized that this new phase is part of the State Master Plan for Semiconductors, a collaborative strategy between government, industry, and academia guiding the sector’s path to 2030.
Strategic Donation by Infineon Technologies
Infineon Technologies, a key player in the industry, has donated an ATP production line to the Centro Universitario de Ciencias Exactas e Ingenierías (CUCEI) at the University of Guadalajara. This specialized equipment will enable students and faculty to gain hands-on experience in real-world ATP operations, bolstering Jalisco’s technical talent in this specific stage of the semiconductor supply chain.
Impact on Education and Talent Development
The installation of this equipment at CUCEI will benefit over 2,600 students pursuing careers in fields such as electronics engineering, intelligent systems, mechatronics and autonomous systems, and electromechanical engineering. Last year, 100 teachers were trained across the ecosystem, with 42 from the University of Guadalajara. Once the equipment is installed (expected by early 2026), these teachers will begin working with it in January.
Future Prospects for Jalisco’s Semiconductor Industry
According to CUCEI projections, students in the last two semesters of their programs will start practicing with the equipment by August, and the first cohort of ATP specialists is expected to graduate by the following August.
