Strengthening Jalisco’s Agri-Food Exports to the US

Guadalajara, Jalisco. To ensure that Jalisco’s agricultural products reach the United States and other international markets more competitively and securely, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) is promoting the “Jalisco-Laredo Agri-Food Corridor” project.

Objective and Benefits

The corridor aims to strengthen Jalisco’s agri-food exports by implementing logistical, regulatory, and institutional conditions that enhance efficiency, traceability, and product shelf life. Eduardo Ron Ramos, head of SADER Jalisco, explained the project’s goals.

During a working visit to Laredo, Texas, Ron Ramos highlighted that the initiative would leverage joint goods dispatch programs and refrigerated inspection facilities at the Laredo port. This ensures that products reach their destination with the highest quality, providing significant advantages over other transportation routes like Guadalajara-Pharr.

  • The Jalisco-Laredo Agri-Food Corridor reduces export times and costs, maintaining Jalisco’s position as Mexico’s “Agri-Food Giant” and solidifying its status as the primary supplier to the North American market.
  • Laredo’s strategic location offers direct access to Highway 35, the third longest north-south highway in the United States, spanning six U.S. states and providing an efficient and competitive route for cargo transport.
  • The Agency for Food Safety, Quality, and Agri-Food Inspection (ASICA) director mentioned that the Jalisco-Laredo corridor will benefit local producers by expediting customs clearance with joint inspection and faster processes for products, permits, and certifications.

Relevance of Jalisco’s Agri-Food Sector

Jalisco is renowned as Mexico’s leading agri-food producer, with a diverse range of products including fruits, vegetables, and livestock. The state’s strategic location, advanced agricultural technology, and skilled workforce have positioned it as a significant contributor to Mexico’s agri-food sector.

By enhancing the Jalisco-Laredo Agri-Food Corridor, Sader aims to maintain Jalisco’s prominence in the agri-food industry and strengthen its position as a key supplier to the North American market. This initiative will not only benefit local producers but also contribute to Mexico’s overall agri-food export growth.
