Background on Jalisco’s Role in Semiconductor Design
Jalisco, Mexico, is a national leader in semiconductor design and plans to strengthen this aspect of its tech ecosystem. According to Cindy Blanco, the Secretary of Economic Development (Sedeco), Jalisco aims to graduate at least 3,000 specialized engineers in semiconductor design by 2030.
Kutsari Project and Specialized Park
As part of the Kutsari project, which involves Jalisco, Puebla, and Sonora states to boost technological innovation and generate intellectual property in the semiconductor sector, Jalisco will develop a specialized park for semiconductor chip design.
- The park will focus on attracting and nurturing talent specializing in semiconductor design.
- The goal is to graduate 3,000 specialized engineers by 2030.
Attracting Foreign Investment
Blanco explained that the specialized talent pipeline will help attract foreign investment, as established companies like Micron and NXP have expressed interest in expanding projects in Jalisco if a specialized talent pool is available.
Following a recent working trip to Taiwan, a semiconductor company from Taiwan has shown interest in setting up operations in Jalisco.
Unaffected by US Tariffs
Blanco clarified that the 100% tariff announced by the US on semiconductor imports does not affect Jalisco, as the state exports services rather than tangible goods.
“When Trump announced the 100% tariffs on semiconductors, we were relieved that Jalisco’s strength lies in semiconductor design. The tariff does not affect us since it applies to tangible goods, and we export services instead,” Blanco said.
