National Textile Industry Struggles with 3.8% PIB Value Decline
According to the Cámara Nacional de la Industria del Vestido (Canaive), the Mexican textile industry is facing a 3.8% annual reduction in PIB value by the first quarter of 2025, as reported during the opening of Intermoda 83, a gathering of industry companies, buyers, and experts.
Abraham Daniel Zaga Highlights Industry Challenges
Abraham Daniel Zaga, vicepresident of Canaive, mentioned to the media that the Mexican textile industry is grappling with “numerous issues,” including trade volatility with the United States, uncertainties from fluctuating negotiations and threats of tariffs.
- Export value for textiles from January to May 2025: $2,668 million USD
- Export value for all of 2024: $7,612 million Mexican pesos
Canaive aims to help more manufacturers expand into international markets.
Jalisco’s Textile Industry Shows Signs of Recovery
Jalisco stands out as an exception, with a 5% annual growth in textile industry PIB value by the first quarter of 2025, while the national figure shows concerning declines. Jaime Pedroza Hernández, Canaive Jalisco president, stated to El Economista,: “We are reversing the 10% drop we had last year.”
- 98% of Jalisco municipalities are integrated into the textile value chain
- Textile workshops are common, producing uniforms and other items, making it a strong sector across all municipalities
Canaive Jalisco promotes the “Made in Jalisco” initiative, supported by the state government and chamber, to strengthen local products and create more jobs.
The strategy aims to differentiate local production and coordinate efforts among businesses, artisans, and designers. The first phase of this initiative was showcased at Intermoda.
Industry Resilience Amidst Challenges
Zaga stated, “Our goal is to maintain stability this year; we don’t expect growth. The aim is to remain level.” He referred to employment stability, with 243,190 direct jobs by May 2025, despite job losses and gains due to export growth.
Canaive represents over 20,000 formal economic entities nationwide providing these direct jobs, mostly held by women. Mexico has shown resilience with a 12% increase in exports to the US compared to Q1 2024, according to Zaga.
With a collaboration agreement with Antad member stores, Canaive aims to counter the large illegal market by focusing on legitimate growth.
