Introduction to Morelos’ Initiative for Film Industry Development
Morelos, a Mexican state, is actively working to become the most attractive destination for the audiovisual industry in Mexico. The secretary of Tourism, Daniel Altafi, announced the creation of tax incentives, including a cash rebate that could reach up to 30% of verified production expenses filmed in the region.
Governor’s Strategy and Establishment of Film Commission
Governor Margarita González, coming from the tourism sector, aims to make the audiovisual industry one of the pillars for economic development while diversifying production capabilities. To achieve this, a Film Commission General was established, which will have a yet-to-be-determined budget for tax incentives or production support for both national and international projects.
The rules of operation are being constructed, focusing on having the best conditions in the country. The strategy also includes verifying that a significant portion of the economic impact comes from local suppliers.
Learning from Successful Film Destinations
To establish optimal rules, a study was conducted on successful film industry destinations such as Colombia, Guadalajara, Sonora, and Morelia (known for its film festival). The goal is to offer the best attractions for productions and ensure that the Film Commission can verify local economic impact and spending by local suppliers.
Expanding the Scope of Film Productions
Besides commercials, short films, and feature-length movies, Morelos is also targeting TV series and reality shows. These productions can generate significant organic and indirect promotion for the state.
The Tourism Secretary’s strategy includes creating a comprehensive catalog of filming locations and services available to producers. This catalog is expected to be ready by the end of the year.
Attracting Major Players in the Film Industry
Amazon MGM Studios recently visited Morelos, touring two “Pueblos Mágicos” (Magical Towns) – Tepoztlán and Tlayacapan. They were shown the current convention center as a potential future location and became aware of the state’s proximity to Churubusco studios.
The visit also included the Cuernavaca airport, Xochicalco archaeological zone, and Jardines de México complex. The production company was impressed with local technical professionals and the catering industry, honed by the experience of hosting over 5,000 weddings annually in Morelos.
Netflix also shows interest in Morelos, recognizing its potential to host multiple major platforms rather than just one production house.
Morelos’ Film Production History and Future Prospects
Throughout the years, Morelos has hosted both national and international productions due to its natural scenery, historical hacienda infrastructure, and central location. This has positioned the state as a decentralized option and a relief for large-scale productions.
