Nissan’s Departure and its Impact on Morelos

Following the announcement of Nissan’s closure in Jiutepec, Morelos state authorities are actively working to bring new investments and mitigate the economic and labor impact. Governor Margarita González Saravia confirmed that four shipowner companies have shown interest in setting up operations at the former Nissan Civac site.

“These companies will need to negotiate directly with Nissan for the purchase of assets and facilities in Civac. We will analyze what best suits our state’s interests to facilitate this process,” González Saravia stated.

Nissan has initiated the process of terminating employment for 869 workers, scheduled for November 10-12, 2025. The company assured that employees will receive severance pay according to the agreement with the Independent Workers Union of Nissan Mexicana and the current collective bargaining agreement.

González Saravia mentioned maintaining communication with the union and noted that many highly skilled workers might transfer to other plants, such as Aguascalientes, where specialized labor is in demand.

Strengthening Investments in Morelos

The governor emphasized her unwavering commitment to not only attract new companies but also to bolster existing investments in Morelos.

Innovation and the STS Forum

The Latin American and Caribbean Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum, taking place December 4-5 at the Morelos Convention Center, originates from Japan and brings together the scientific community, government representatives, and business leaders under the theme of regional cooperation in science, technology, and innovation.

One of the initiatives is the Mexican Innovation Award, featuring 13 categories including patents, utility models, industrial design, electromobility, semiconductors, health, and water solutions. Each category offers a prize of 250,000 pesos, intended to act as seed capital for technological developments not currently available in the market.

Authorities hope that the forum, especially the Minds in Action investment round, will secure over 800 million pesos in investments for submitted projects. “This would be the highest amount ever achieved, primarily from the private sector, to channel resources towards innovations that do not yet exist,” said Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy.

Morelos’ scientific ecosystem boasts strong credentials to attract a portion of this investment. “We have significant projects in renewable energy, health biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, vaccines, and medications. Morelos was chosen as a research and innovation center with 40 federal-level research centers and 2,500 researchers,” González Saravia explained.
