Introduction to the New Central de Ciclo Combinado (CCC) El Sauz II

Querétaro, Qro. The new Central de Ciclo Combinado (CCC) El Sauz II will provide certainty to investment projects seeking to establish in the state, according to Marco Antonio Del Prete Tercero, Secretary of Sustainable Development (Sedesu).

Named After a Historical Figure

The new installation, named after the independentist Josefa Ortiz Téllez-Girón, ensures that Querétaro has sufficient energy to meet its needs.

No Reported Cases of Investment Withdrawal Due to Energy Shortage

According to the state secretary, there are no records of companies leaving Querétaro due to energy shortages.

“We will be generating an additional 269 megawatts (MW) in Querétaro, which provides certainty to investments and energy supply. This gives us peace of mind, fortunately, I can say that no company has left Querétaro due to a lack of energy. (…) It gives us certainty that there will be sufficient and ample energy for investments wanting to come to the state,” Del Prete Tercero stated.

Promoting Sustainable Energy

In parallel, he added that efforts are being made to promote sustainable energy use, including the implementation of solar panels in businesses and reducing energy consumption from fossil fuels.

“Today, the El Sauz II combined cycle power plant is low in emissions; it’s an environmentally friendly combined cycle power plant, and we are also promoting the transition to solar panels. Many companies have adopted this as a suitable measure, and we are working hard on various fronts to reduce energy consumption from fossil fuels,” Del Prete Tercero explained.

Increased Capacity

The new CCC has a net capacity of 269 megawatts (MW) and is located in Pedro Escobedo. It was inaugurated by President Claudia Sheinbaum on December 20.

During the inauguration, Emilia Esther Calleja Alor, General Director of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), emphasized that the infrastructure increases capabilities to ensure Querétaro’s energy demand.

Calleja Alor further explained that in 2021, Querétaro registered a demand of 1,535 MW, but the installed capacity was only 723 MW.

Contribution to National Electric System

However, the 269 MW from the new CCC will complement the 958 MW from Salamanca’s CCC in Guanajuato and nearly 450 MW from Villa de Reyes’ CCC in San Luis Potosí. These three centrals (all inaugurated this year) contribute an additional almost 1,677 MW to the National Electric System.
