Announcement by Consejo de Comerciantes del Centro Histórico in Puebla
Puebla, Pue. The Consejo de Comerciantes del Centro Histórico en Puebla announced that school graduations will generate an economic impact of 600 million pesos, a 9% increase compared to 2024.
President’s Perspective
José Juan Ayala Vázquez, president of the organization, described this season as positive. While it’s a significant expense for families whose children are graduating, it’s also a source of pride to see their children reach the next educational level or graduate from university.
Ayala Vázquez mentioned that parents with children in university tend to spend more, covering items like clothing, shoes, graduation dinner, photography, and even a graduation ring.
“This event involves businesses of all kinds, some seeing greater profits than others due to graduations, but it only happens twice a year,” he explained.
Price Stability
Ayala Vázquez emphasized that prices will remain stable to assist family economies, as although families plan this expense a year in advance, the expenditure remains substantial.
He estimated that out of the 39,817 economic units benefiting from graduations, restaurants offering food services, fast food, seafood, self-service, and snacks stand out with 14,980 establishments. Additionally, there are 8,470 clothing stores, accessory shops, leather goods, and various items. Furthermore, there are 4,019 gift shops; 3,050 economic units include salons, beauty clinics, and hairdressers; while 2,940 dulcerías, pastelerías, and bakery items exist alongside 2,834 shoe stores, 1,690 wine and liquor stores, and 1,330 party and convention salons.
Economic Impact
Ayala Vázquez believes this will be the best year, as businesses agree, since in-person classes resumed at 100% only three years ago. Graduations during confinement did not generate family expenses, causing businesses to lose income.
He noted that this is not the peak sales season, ranking between the fourth and fifth spots, as it follows holidays like Christmas, Mother’s Day, and Easter.
However, he acknowledged that graduations still stimulate local economy, even benefiting informal commerce before summer vacations, favoring tourism service providers.
He praised the municipal authorities for their collaboration in public space operations, reducing street vendors in commercial areas.
