The Impact of Film Productions on Tourism

In the lead-up to the 67th Ariel Awards ceremony, a mural commemorating “La Noche de la Iguana” was unveiled in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The 1964 film’s production marked a turning point for the city, bringing international tourism and captivating romance between stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Beyond “La Noche de la Iguana,” Puerto Vallarta has served as a natural backdrop for over 50 films, generating tourism and economic growth. Michelle Fridman, Secretary of Tourism for Jalisco (SECTURJAL), highlighted the city’s diverse offerings and rich film history, stating that more than 50 productions have filmed in Puerto Vallarta across various formats.

“Puerto Vallarta boasts gastronomy, culture, adventure tourism, sun, and beaches, but it also has a significant film history,” Fridman explained. “This year’s Ariel Awards ceremony, celebrating Mexico’s cinematic achievements, is being held in Puerto Vallarta for the first time at a beach destination. Out of only three Ariel Awards ceremonies outside Mexico City, two were in Guadalajara and now Puerto Vallarta hosts this prestigious event.”
