Declaration of Emergency and Resource Allocation

Querétaro, Qro. – Following the declaration of a state of emergency due to recent heavy rains, local governments in Querétaro will have access to approximately 78 to 88 million pesos to address the contingency, announced Governor Mauricio Kuri González.

After the executive authority of the state issued the declaration, due to the impacts in Querétaro, El Marqués, and Corregidora, it is expected that the capital will receive around 38 million pesos and the state government a sum between 40 and 50 million pesos.

“I understand that there are funds from both the municipality and the state, prepared for any type of emergency, in both the municipality and the state. With the declaration, we can now access these resources,” Kuri González explained.

In addition to managing resources with the federal government, Kuri González mentioned that he is awaiting confirmation of a meeting this week with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to request support.

Resource Management and Coordination

On Saturday, August 23, Kuri González communicated with the Secretary of Interior, Rosa Isela Rodríguez, and Subsecretary of Infrastructure, Juan Carlos Fuentes, to request support for infrastructure projects.

Kuri González estimated that most resources will be directed towards supporting affected homes, primarily in the Felipe Carrillo Puerto delegation in the state capital and to rebuild damaged infrastructure.

Regarding the performance of public servants in preventing and addressing the emergency, Kuri González highlighted the coordination between various public instances: municipal, state, and federal. He mentioned that they have received support from the Mexican Army and the National Guard.

“We informed people, and we were very attentive in all important areas. A lot of water fell; actually, when this happened, we thought another system had passed quickly, but another formed rapidly and lasted for about four hours of continuous rain,” he said.

Collaborative Efforts and Support

Municipal and state authorities have met to evaluate resource and support alternatives for the population, Kuri González added.

“All I can say is that we won’t leave people alone, and the support wasn’t just during the emergency. It rained like never before… A stream that had never overflowed overflowed by more than a meter. Unfortunately, many homes were affected, and my main goal is to help those who lost everything, and we will help them,” he stated.

Increase in Fatalities

Confirmation of Deaths and Extensive Damages

In this context, Governor Kuri González also confirmed the discovery of a young man’s body, who was reported missing amidst the contingency.

This case adds to the two reported fatalities on Friday, of individuals presumably swept away by the water. Thus, there have been three confirmed deaths so far.

Additionally, 280 severely affected homes were reported out of the 2,200 houses that received attention due to the rain’s impact. The rains began on Friday afternoon and continued throughout the weekend, according to the state administration.
