Overview of Job Trends in Querétaro

Querétaro, a Mexican state, has seen the creation of 7,826 new jobs from January to May 2025, according to data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). The majority of these jobs are permanent positions, although the eventual employment sector has shown a negative balance, with both sectors experiencing declines for two consecutive months.

Permanent vs. Eventual Employment

By the end of May, Querétaro lost 2,312 jobs, with 1,267 being permanent positions and 1,045 eventual ones. Permanent employment accounted for 8,398 new positions in the first five months of the year, while eventual employment saw a decrease of 572 workers compared to the end of 2024.

Both permanent and eventual employment have contracted compared to the previous year, reflecting in the overall formal employment trend.

Year-over-Year Comparison

The 7,826 jobs this year represent a 47.2% reduction from the 14,826 formal positions during the same period in 2024. Permanent employment saw a 41.6% reduction, as it contributed 14,372 jobs in the first five months of 2024, but only 8,398 jobs this year.

A year ago, eventual employment added 454 new positions. However, in 2025, the figure stands at -572 jobs. The state’s industries of transformation, social and community services, commerce, agriculture, ganadería, silvicultura, pesca y caza, and electricity, captation, and supply of potable water have been the largest employers, with 4,800, 2,218, 1,848, 421, and 145 positions respectively.

Sector-wise Job Losses

Services for businesses, individuals, and households suffered the most job losses, with 966 fewer records; followed by transportation and communications (-271), construction (-268), and extractive industries (-101).

Repatriated Queretanos Seek Employment

In this context, 250 Queretanos who have been repatriated have approached the State Labor Secretariat (ST) in search of employment opportunities, with 25 successfully linked to a job opportunity, according to ST head Liliana San Martín Castillo.

The ST maintains a job bank with between 2,000 and 4,000 vacancies to which individuals can apply by visiting the ST.

Regarding the labor market, San Martín Castillo mentioned that some companies are investing, which is expected to gradually increase employment throughout the remainder of the year.
