Background on the Querétaro Commerce Sector

Querétaro, Qro. The commerce sector in Querétaro projects a slower growth rate for 2025, according to projections by the Cámara de Comercio de Querétaro, amidst a complex economic scenario.

Key Figures and Their Relevance

René Loya Poletti, the president of the Cámara de Comercio de Querétaro, estimates that local commerce will grow between 4 and 6% in 2025. This range is two percentage points lower than the growth rate of 2024.

Challenges Facing the Commerce Sector

Throughout 2025, the commerce sector has experienced ripple effects from the uncertainty caused by the United States’ trade policy towards México. Additionally, there has been a decrease in resources available for federal infrastructure projects.

“One of the problems was everything related to the United States, which caused large investments to stall, and that’s a spillover affecting all the small and medium-sized businesses. The other issue is that federal projects have stopped releasing resources, especially in construction and transportation, which are two major industries from a commercial perspective.”

These challenges led to customers extending payment periods for their orders, causing low liquidity and straining resource flow. Despite these difficulties, businesses continued operations and tried to control their workforce.

Support Measures for Businesses

In response to the liquidity shortage, some entrepreneurs sought bank or savings and loan association credits. To assist members in need, the Cámara de Comercio de Querétaro signed a collaboration agreement with a savings and loan association to provide credits ranging from 50,000 pesos to eligible members.

Since late September, the sector has observed improvements, with some overdue payments gradually being regularized.

“There are still companies with up to six months of delayed payments from their clients. Payments are starting to normalize, but it’s not fully normalized yet.”

Economic Performance in 2025

In the first quarter of 2025, Querétaro’s commerce sector recorded an annual decline of 4.1%, the most significant drop among the 32 federal entities, based on original data from the Indicador Trimestral de la Actividad Económica Estatal (ITAEE).

Preliminary Gross Domestic Product by Federal Entity figures indicate that in 2023, tertiary activities (including commerce) contributed 49.7 percentage points to Querétaro’s economy. Wholesale commerce contributed 10.5 percentage points, and retail commerce added 6.6 percentage points.
