Current Status and Growth

Quintana Roo, Mexico, is rapidly approaching 140,000 hotel rooms, aiming to surpass Las Vegas in the long term regarding the number of hotel rooms. According to the state’s Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), projections indicate that in the next five years, Quintana Roo will exceed 150,000 rooms.

As of June this year, Quintana Roo boasts a total of 135,961 rooms across 1,478 hotels. This represents a 9.2% increase since June 2022, as the state had only 124,463 rooms three years ago. Over this period, 11,468 new rooms have been constructed, primarily in the northern region.

Future Investments

Several hotel projects are underway, including 782 new rooms for Costa Mujeres and Playa del Carmen. Grupo Posadas is set to open Devossion by Live Aqua Playa del Carmen, a 314-room resort this summer of 2025. This addition is part of the brand’s expansion into the “all-inclusive” segment, with 1,100 new rooms across Mexico this year, targeting destinations with high occupancy rates, competitive pricing, and growing interest from national and international travelers.

Another project, the recently authorized Proyecto Amaneceres in Costa Mujeres, consists of 468 rooms in Isla Mujeres’ continental zone. This project is part of the “Costa Mujeres Master Plan” for tourism development.

Managed by Solar Solimanche S.A. de C.V., the project has received approval from Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) within a five-year timeframe.

The combined investment for both projects totals approximately $1.3 billion. Additionally, an estimated 25,000 new rooms are projected for Isla Mujeres’ continental zone, with 11,000 already inaugurated. This leaves 14,000 rooms to be developed in this area, not including over 1,000 condominium projects across the state for short-term rental through platforms like Airbnb.
