Introduction to the Tequila Industry’s New Initiative
Guadalajara, Jalisco. The Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT) has announced the launch of the Global Tequila Industry Intelligence and Innovation Center in 2026. This strategic platform will integrate analysis, technology, intellectual property, and international cooperation to bolster the competitiveness and sustainability of the tequila agroindustry.
Key Initiatives of the Project
According to Aurelio López Rocha, president of the CRT, there are three main initiatives:
- Think Tank: A center for analysis, innovation, and strategy that will support decision-making in the sector using tools like artificial intelligence to anticipate risks, detect opportunities, and elevate the competitiveness of the production chain.
- Center for Technology and Innovation Support (CATI): Specialized in the tequila agroindustry, backed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). The CATI aims to generate, protect, and transfer technological knowledge, as well as foster the strategic use of patents, innovation, and trend analysis to drive sustainable development in the sector.
- Regional Office for Origin Latin America: An international alliance of geographical indications, soon to be inaugurated at the CRT’s facilities. This office will strengthen cooperation, protection, promotion, and innovation of geographical indications and denominations of origin in Latin America, pushing for their global recognition, defense, and sustainable development.
Digital Application
López Rocha also highlighted the sector’s digital progress with the development of the DOT 360 (Tequila Origin 360) app. This tool will bring tequila closer to consumers, experts, and industry players by providing detailed information about the Denomination of Origin Tequila, certified brands, destillery locations, and other relevant production ecosystem data.
The Significance of the Tequila Industry’s Initiatives
These initiatives aim to establish tequila not only as a cultural emblem of Mexico but also as an innovative, protected, and globally competitive agroindustry.
