Strengthening International Protection for Mexico’s Iconic Drink

Guadalajara, Jalisco. The United Arab Emirates has become the 58th country to recognize the Denomination of Origin Tequila (DOT), further bolstering the international protection and acknowledgment of Mexico’s most representative beverage.

Understanding the Significance

Rodolfo Villarruel, head of the International Affairs department at the CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila), highlighted, “It’s crucial to note that this country’s legislation prevents it from granting registrations for alcoholic beverages. Therefore, obtaining the registration in class 42, which focuses on analytical services, quality control, and authentication provided by the CRT, holds special importance. This grants exclusivity to the CRT for tequila certification in this country.”

Export Figures and Recognition Process

More than one million liters of tequila were exported to the UAE in 2024, a figure similar to current-year exports, according to CRT records. Villarruel Franco explained that efforts to secure tequila recognition in the UAE began in 2021 with the submission of required documentation.

  • The primary challenge was legalizing all necessary documents, which once sent to the UAE, facilitated a smoother and quicker process.
  • This ultimately led to obtaining the registration for both “Agave” and “Tequila” by the end of 2025.

Additional CRT Initiatives in the UAE

Beyond DOT recognition, the CRT has also undertaken other actions in the UAE this year, including promoting “Professionalization in Tequila Culture” targeted at staff in Dubai and Abu Dhabi establishments, as well as physical monitoring of sales points.
