A team of researchers from Mass General Brigham (United States) has unveiled that environmental documentation technologies, powered by AI-generated tools that draft clinical notes for patient visits, have significantly reduced physician burnout.

Study Findings and Impact

The study, published in the ‘JAMA Network Open’, demonstrated that using these technologies led to a “significant” reduction of 21.2% in physician burnout prevalence over 84 days within the Mass General Brigham hospital network.

Meanwhile, in Emory Healthcare’s network, there was an absolute increase of 30.7% in documentation-related wellbeing at 60 days.

“Environmental documentation technology has truly been transformative, freeing doctors from their keyboards for increased face-to-face interaction with patients,” said Rebecca Mishuris, the principal co-author of the study and director of Medical Informatics at Mass General Brigham Hospital.

Based on surveys conducted among over 1,400 doctors and healthcare professionals from both networks, participants reported “reclaiming” their nights and weekends and rediscovering the “joy” of practicing medicine.

“Hardly any other intervention in our field has such a significant impact on professional burnout,” added Dr. Mishuris, who noted that the syndrome affects more than half of US doctors and is linked to time spent on electronic clinical records, especially outside working hours.

Addressing Burnout and Its Consequences

Burnout is one of the issues that hospitals nationwide are “seeking to address,” according to co-author Lisa Rotenstein, who highlighted the need for further study on environmental documentation.

“Burnout negatively impacts both providers and patients, who face increased risks to their safety and access to medical care,” said Dr. Rotenstein, also the director of the Medical Experience and Excellence in Practice Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The study authors emphasized the need for further investigation into these technologies among a broader population, assessing whether burnout rates improve over time as AI advances or stabilizes/reverses.
