Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Outlines Vision for Personalized AI
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has conveyed his goal of developing a personalized superintelligence available to all users to help them achieve their goals. This superintelligence will be delivered through personal devices, such as smart glasses, which he refers to as the primary future wearable computer.
Meta’s Superintelligence AI Initiative
For some time, Meta has been working on various initiatives to develop what they call “superintelligence AI,” a term referring to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that aims to match human-level intelligence in performing a wide range of tasks.
- Meta has been advancing issues like creating the Superintelligence Labs team, composed of professionals from companies such as Scale AI, GitHub, and engineers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
Financial Performance and AI Vision
Coinciding with Meta’s second-quarter 2025 results, with revenues reaching $47.5 billion (a 22% increase from the previous year), Zuckerberg shared his vision on AI’s future, specifically personalized and superintelligent AI for all users, delivered through devices like smart glasses.
Progress and Impact of Superintelligence
In a statement on Meta’s website, Zuckerberg mentioned that in recent months, they’ve seen signs their AI systems are improving, albeit slowly. He asserted that the development of superintelligence is “clearly visible.”
Reflecting on this progress, Zuckerberg envisioned a new era of personal empowerment where people can better shape the world according to their choices. He emphasized that this superintelligence would have a “more significant impact” on users’ lives, helping them achieve goals, create, experience adventures, and be a “better friend” guiding them to become the person they aspire to be.
Personalized Superintelligence and Devices
Meta plans to offer personalized superintelligence to all users, putting this power in their hands to direct it toward what they value in life. This contrasts with other tech industry players who believe AI should focus on automating all valuable work.
Zuckerberg’s view differs from opinions like those of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who has suggested AI could replace many jobs.
Smart Glasses as the Future of Personal Computing
Meta’s superintelligence will be deeply personal, understanding users’ goals to help them achieve them. This approach aligns with personal devices like smart glasses, which can understand users’ environments from their perspective by seeing what they see, hearing what they hear, and interacting with them at any moment.
“These will become our primary computing devices,” Zuckerberg stated. He further explained during an investor call that smart glasses are the ideal format for AI and that those who don’t use them will be at a “significant cognitive disadvantage” in the future. He also mentioned that adding screens to these glasses will increase their value.
Meta already offers smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta and recently announced Oakley Meta.
Security Concerns with Superintelligence
In his statement, Zuckerberg acknowledged that while the benefits of superintelligence should be shared widely, it also raises new security concerns.
He emphasized the need to be “rigorous” in mitigating these risks and “careful” about what they publish in open-source code. Despite this, Meta maintains its stance on sharing technologies to “build a free society.”
“This decade seems to be the decisive period for determining AI’s path and whether superintelligence will be a tool for personal empowerment or a force focused on replacing large segments of society,” Zuckerberg concluded.
AI Boosts Instagram and Facebook
During the investor presentation, Zuckerberg also noted that AI has increased user engagement on Meta’s social platforms, partly due to its AI assistant and improving models that “significantly enhance” the ability to show users relevant content.
Specifically, Meta reported that daily active users on its platforms—Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp—have grown to nearly 3.5 billion in recent months. Advancements in recommendation systems have led to a 5% increase in time spent on Facebook and a 6% increase on Instagram over the last quarter.
Investment in AI Infrastructure
To execute its AI plans, Meta needs infrastructure capable of supporting its technology. The company intends to double its investment in data center and server construction.
According to the statement on their latest results, Meta expects capital expenditures for 2025 to reach between $66 billion and $72 billion, an annual increase of approximately $30 billion.
This investment surge will extend to 2026, as Meta anticipates a similar increase in AI infrastructure spending next year. “We expect leading AI infrastructure development to be a crucial advantage for developing top-notch AI models and product experiences, so we plan to significantly increase our investments in 2026 to support this work,” Meta’s CFO, Susan Li, detailed.
Meta has recently announced the creation of two new data centers with over a gigawatt of power to support AI superintelligence. The first, Prometheus, will be available by 2026.
