Introduction to the Program and Its Significance

Clara Brugada Molina, the Head of Government in Mexico City, announced a new program called “Desde la Cuna” (From the Cradle) that guarantees economic support for children aged 0 to 3 years old. The initiative aims to provide 66,400 support packages so far, with a target of reaching 85,000 beneficiaries by the end of this year and universal access by 2026.

Program Details

  • The goal is to extend the program to all children under a year old by 2026.
  • The support is intended to ensure the rights of early childhood as a shared responsibility between families and governments.

Program’s Objectives and Impact

Brugada Molina emphasized that the program recognizes children as subjects of rights and aims to guarantee their development during the crucial first 1,000 days of life. These early years are vital for physical, emotional, and cognitive growth.

The program also offers educational and recreational activities for children, such as positive parenting workshops, nutritional guidance, and medical monitoring.

Future Plans

Brugada Molina mentioned that her administration will soon support pregnant women to ensure proper development of Mexico City’s children from gestation.

Supporting Statements

  • Araceli Damián González, Secretary of Well-being: The program positions Mexico City’s government as a leader in Latin America for implementing a social policy targeting early childhood.
  • María del Rocío García Pérez, Head of the National System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF): The program aims to create a more equitable Mexico by placing children at the center of public policies and reducing inequalities and poverty in the capital.
