San Francisco Embraces Mexican Independence Day and International Tourists

San Francisco, California, is gearing up to capitalize on Mexican Independence Day celebrations, unveil new attractions, and attract more international tourists from Mexico, Europe, and Asia. The city is collaborating with Vive Frida, an organization dedicated to promoting Mexico’s cultural richness through the legacy of artist Frida Kahlo, along with Aeroméxico and Pricetravel as strategic partners.

The Rationale Behind the Proposals

“For millions of admirers, Frida Kahlo is an iconic symbol of art and freedom. However, few know that she lived two transformative periods of profound happiness and personal growth in San Francisco. The first was in 1930, newly married to Diego Rivera, and the second in 1940, after a brief divorce and subsequent remarriage to him. In both instances, San Francisco became a creative refuge that inspired her style, nourished her identity, and reinforced her artistic freedom.”

These periods also brought joy and color to her work, which is now being shared through these tourism experiences.

The New Offering

Francisco Travel and Vive Frida spent a year and eight months to develop their new tourism offering based on the painter.

Main Experience: Frida Kahlo Party Boat

The primary experience, the Frida Kahlo Party Boat, will make its debut on September 14, coinciding with the Mexican Independence Day weekend. The event will feature the presence of authorities from both Mexico and San Francisco, extending throughout September and October, linking Mexican Independence Day celebrations with Día de Muertos festivities. The boat tour will offer breathtaking sunsets, live music, Mexican cocktails, costume contests inspired by Frida, and photo opportunities surrounded by the essence of the artist.

Organizers envision potential future events, such as themed weddings, on these boats.

Culinary Experiences

Two culinary experiences are planned: one at China Live, a prominent Chinatown restaurant, presenting the Red Frida Clipping Menu, inspired by Chinatown’s significance in her work and personal style. The other at Loló, a Mexican restaurant in the Mission district, where guests can enjoy high-level Mexican cuisine honoring Frida’s roots and her connection to the Latino community.

The Big Bus tour will include two or three stops at significant locations, sharing intriguing anecdotes about Frida Kahlo’s life.

Meanwhile, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco will participate by showcasing Frida and Diego’s works from its permanent collection.

Timeline and Availability

Rosalba Sabogal, Manager of San Francisco Travel for Mexico and Colombia, informed El Economista that the tourism offering will be active in September and October. The success of these experiences will determine if they are repeated in future dates.
