The Fusion of Soccer and Artificial Intelligence
Soccer is now speaking the language of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as FIFA plans a technological leap that will involve creating 3D AI avatars for every player participating in the World Cup. This initiative marks a significant evolution, offering even more detailed real-time analysis of each player’s body positioning.
Unveiling Innovations at Lenovo Tech World 2026
During the Lenovo Tech World 2026 in Las Vegas, alongside CES, FIFA and Lenovo showcased their technological innovations promising to revolutionize how soccer is played, officiated, and experienced during the global event.
Football AI Pro: The Core of FIFA’s Technological Advancement
At the heart of FIFA’s technological advancement is Football AI Pro, an AI-based knowledge assistant that processes millions of data points from each match to produce analyses, 3D visualizations, and accessible clips for all teams.
This tool allows for pre- and post-match analysis, providing uniform information throughout the competition in multiple languages.
AI Avatars: The Pivotal Development
This system includes the generation of highly realistic 3D models for all 48 participating teams using AI. Each player is represented by a digital replica created through a scanning process capturing 29 distinct body points (arms, legs, shoulders, head, torso, exact height) in just one second.
The technology tracks 50 frames per second during scanning, producing a mathematically accurate model of each player. These models are created using neural networks to interpolate data and generate 3D representations that precisely replicate the player’s body position during a pass.
Referee Perspectives: Real-time Viewpoints
Another innovation is an updated version of the referee perspective technology, allowing live broadcasts from the referees’ viewpoints.
These cameras, worn by referees, incorporate AI to stabilize images in real-time, eliminating motion blur. This enables both referees and spectators to access a clearer perspective from within the field.
Beneficiaries of FIFA’s Technological Leap
- Coaches: Before each match, coaches can consult Football AI Pro about their opponents. The AI generates a report with video clips, positioning graphics, and 3D avatars showcasing the rival team’s tactics.
- Players: Players receive personalized analyses, understanding their strengths and areas for improvement based on data rather than coaches’ intuition.
- Analysts: Analysts can explore millions of data points, create custom visualizations, and uncover hidden patterns. The AI simulates scenarios and projects likely outcomes.
Although the ball hasn’t hit the field yet, the data is already in motion. These announced technologies are part of a digital transformation process that benefits team preparation, technical staff work, and each selection’s strategies.
The 2026 World Cup welcomes what we can now call “the digitalization of sports.”
