Background on the Situation
Heavy rains have caused significant disruptions across Mexico, leaving 112 localities isolated in the states of Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Hidalgo, and Puebla. The Mexican government has pledged to distribute financial aid of 10,000 pesos to affected families.
Progress in Restoring Communication and Services
According to Laura Velázquez Alzúa, head of the National Coordination of Civil Protection (CNPC), the number of isolated localities has decreased to 112 following collaborative efforts by federal, state, and municipal authorities.
- Hidalgo: The state has the highest number of isolated communities, with 74 (66% of the total), followed by Veracruz with 31, Puebla with seven, and no isolated localities in San Luis Potosí and Querétaro.
- Access to Isolated Communities: Only 10 communities in Hidalgo remain without terrestrial or aerial access, but authorities plan to reach them using helicopters and heavy machinery.
- Road Repairs: There have been a total of 481 incidents across the five affected states. 764 have been addressed or are in progress, while 183 are still under repair and 134 remain to be addressed. Additionally, 42 bridges are damaged and being repaired with the support of over 411 pieces of machinery and a task force of 716 workers distributed across 117 fronts.
- Electricity Supply: The Federal Electricity Commission has restored 96.6% of the supply in Hidalgo, 99.6% in Puebla, 99.9% in Veracruz, and 100% in Querétaro and San Luis Potosí.
- School Repairs: Of the 1,297 damaged schools, 805 have been addressed or are under repair. Hidalgo has 213 affected schools, Puebla has 469, Querétaro has 84, San Luis Potosí has 102, and Veracruz has 411.
Financial Aid Distribution and Other Developments
Mexico City’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the distribution of 10,000-pesos financial aid will begin today, targeting an estimated 100,000 families.
According to the federal government’s information microsite, the number of fatalities remains at 76, with an additional 31 people reported missing due to the heavy rains.
