Infrastructure Projects in Nuevo León and Housing Initiatives Announced
During her first report in Monterrey, Nuevo León, President Claudia Sheinbaum discussed various infrastructure projects and housing initiatives for the region. The audience cheered as she mentioned upcoming events, including the official start of the Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo train project, which will pass through Monterrey.
Key Infrastructure Projects
- Construction of 10,000 homes by the National Housing Commission (CONAVI) for non-right holders.
- Building of another 50,000 new homes by the National Housing Fund (INFONAVIT) for low-income families earning less than two minimum general salaries.
- Establishment of IMSS Family Medicine Units (UMAE).
- School renovation and construction projects.
- “Cero Baches” program for nationwide road repaving post-rainy season.
Housing Initiatives
President Sheinbaum highlighted the following housing initiatives:
- Construction of 10,000 homes by CONAVI for non-right holders.
- Building of 50,000 new homes by INFONAVIT for low-income families.
- Debt relief for 5 million families with INFONAVIT debt through a presidential decree.
Additional Projects for IMSS and Education
Sheinbaum Pardo announced further projects for the IMSS and education, including:
- Construction of a UMAE in San Nicolás de los Garza.
- Building of IMSS Centers for Education and Child Care (formerly guarderías).
- Construction and maintenance of all IMSS UMAEs.
- Establishment of a regional hospital.
- Construction of two upper secondary schools and free-women centers in each municipality.
Positive Economic Developments
President Sheinbaum reported on the country’s economic progress, stating:
- Record-breaking Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the first semester.
- Strong Mexican peso and stable employment.
- Collaboration with the private sector for continued growth in public works and welfare programs.
She also mentioned significant reductions in poverty and inequality under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration:
- 13.5 million people lifted out of poverty between 2018 and 2024.
- Historically low poverty levels in Mexico.
- Decreased income disparity, making Mexico the second least unequal country in the Americas after Canada.
Strengthening Welfare Programs
The president emphasized the success of welfare programs, including:
- Support for over 550,000 adults aged 65 and above through pension programs.
- Assistance to 32,800 people with disabilities.
- Scholarships for 2,484 young builders and 4,500 university students.
- Support for 10,000 farmers and 76 preparatory schools through various programs.
- Support for women aged 60 to 64, acknowledging their crucial role in childcare and home management.
- Health programs, such as “Salud Casa por Casa,” with 20,000 healthcare professionals providing preventive care and free medications through Farmacias del Bienestar.
In total, these programs support 1,429,029 individuals with an annual investment of 27,665 pesos dedicated to the people of Nuevo León.
